The U.S. Ski Team announced its “preliminary list of nominations” for the 2012 alpine team. There are nine men and seven women on the A-Team, ten men and six women on the B-Team, nine men and two women on the C-Team. The team also nominated a Development Team of 19 skiers. Last year’s team collected a dozen Cup wins, a World Championship and two silver medals.

Nominated skiers have qualified for the teams according to published criteria. They can choose to accept the nominations or not. The actual roster will be announced this fall. Ski Team staff will work with all nominated athletes leading up to the formal team announcement.

Nominated for the men’s A-Team are Jimmy Cochran, Tommy Ford, Europa Cup slalom champion Nolan Kasper, TJ Lanning, World GS Champion Ted Ligety, two-time World Cup overall champion Bode Miller, Steven Nyman, Marco Sullivan and Olympic medalist Andrew Weibrecht.

The women’s A-Team nominees include Stacey Cook, Olympic gold medalist Julia Mancuso, Alice McKennis,
Laurenne Ross, Sarah Schleper, Leanne Smith and Lindsey Vonn, the US
World Cup wins record holder (41), an Olympic and World gold medalist who will be seeking her fourth World Cup overall title.

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
