U.S. Ski Team C-teamer Nicholas Krause has suffered a broken leg after a training crash in Innerkrems, Austria. The 23-year-old athlete crashed while super-G training at the Austrian resort on March 2, and sustained a compound fracture to his right tibia and fibula. Due to the severity of the injury, Krause was immediately airlifted to the hospital and surgery was performed within hours of his arrival.

BG5B5782“Being knocked down like this again is not fun, but I have never been one to stay down for long,” Krause said. “I plan to be back and stronger than before. Every time I have come back from an injury, I’ve been faster so hopefully the trend continues.”

Unfortunately, the Stratton Mountain School alumnus is no stranger to the hospital as this is the third season-ending injury and fifth major surgery of his career. The American plans to fly back to the United States on Wednesday and attend spring term at Dartmouth before returning to Park City, Utah, this summer to complete the rehabilitation process.

Krause is the current leader in the NorAm overall and super-G standings, and was also in contention for the giant slalom title prior to his injury. Krause has won four NorAm races this season and was preparing for the World Cup GS in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, at the time of the crash.
