Michelle Gisin to Undergo Another Surgery After St. Moritz Training Fall

Swiss ski star Michelle Gisin suffered a serious crash during downhill training in St. Moritz on Thursday, resulting in multiple injuries including torn ligaments in her left knee, a cervical spine injury, and damage to her right wrist.

Gisin, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was airlifted from the course and transported to a hospital in Zurich, where she underwent surgeries on her cervical spine and right hand shortly after the fall. Swiss-Ski confirmed that both procedures “went well” and that Gisin was conscious and communicating with her team in a positive message. “She has recorded a voice message to us this morning. She is doing well given the circumstances and has wished the team all the best,” said Swiss women’s head coach Beat Tschuor, speaking to Swiss media about her condition.

Medical examinations later revealed that Gisin also suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL) in her left knee. These injuries will require a third surgical procedure once she has sufficiently recovered from the earlier operations. Swiss-Ski said she will remain hospitalized “for a few more days” and that her recovery is progressing steadily, noting she is already moving around with crutches.

The crash has resonated throughout the ski racing community, including emotionally for her partner, Italian skier Luca de Aliprandini, who described competing shortly after the incident as “the toughest race of my life.” He added that Gisin is “improving hour by hour” and that “it will take time for her to recover, but given how things went, we are grateful she is doing well.”

Gisin’s season, and likely her Olympic campaign, now faces a long road ahead as she focuses on rehabilitation and the upcoming surgeries.
