LEWISTON, Maine—The University of Vermont had strong showings in all four events on Day Two of the Bates College Winter Carnival, Feb. 23, and overhauled Day One leader Dartmouth College to record a perfect 2013 carnival season.

In the Bates Carnival, which served this year as the NCAA Eastern Regionals, UVM wound up on top, with 939.5 points to 908.5 for Dartmouth, earning UVM its third straight Eastern title. The University of New Hampshire was third (690) edging Middlebury College by a single point. Williams College wound up fifth (568).

Next stop for the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association teams is the NCAA Championships at Middlebury College’s Snow Bowl and Rikert Nordic Center, March 6-9. UVM is the defending national champion.

On Saturday, UVM won team titles in men’s and women’s giant slalom at Sunday River in Newry, and the women’s 10km freestyle mass start race at Black Mountain in Rumford. Dartmouth edged Vermont in the men’s 15km freestyle mass start.

On a day that was grayer and colder than Friday in western Maine, Hig Roberts of Middlebury captured the men’s slalom, with a two-run time of 1:58.46, just two hundredths ahead of UVM’s Tim Kelley. In third was Travis Dawson of UVM (1:59.50), with UNH’s Coley Oliver (1:59.57) and Hunter Black of Dartmouth fifth (1:59.65). The race saw 10 skiers who either failed to finish or were disqualified in the first run, and 17 more in the second run. There was also an unusual amount of hiking in both runs. UVM survived the carnage best, winning the team title with 124 points to 113 for UNH and 96.5 for Dartmouth.

Kate Ryley of UVM, who had to share the giant slalom title on Friday with Harvard’s Rebecca Nadler, had the win to herself in the slalom, finishing in a two-run time of exactly two minutes. Lizzie Kistler of Dartmouth was second in 2:00.92, UVM’s Kristina Riis-Johannessen third (2:01.25), Randa Teschner of UNH fourth (2:02.73) and Dartmouth’s Sara Kikut fifth (2:02.79). UVM won the team event, with 127 points to 115 for Dartmouth, with host team Bates in third (96.5)

At Black Mountain, Mary O’Connell of Dartmouth finished off a weekend sweep with a victory in the mass start 10km freestyle (28:29.2), winning a thrilling sprint to the finish with UVM’s Anja Gruber by just one tenth of a second. Linda Danvind-Malm, also of UVM, was third (28:39.1), Middlebury’s Annie Pokorny fourth (28:48.4) and Annie Hart of Dartmouth fifth (28:52.3). UVM captured the team event with 126 points to Dartmouth’s 120, with Middlebury third (97).

UVM’s Scott Patterson also won both nordic races at Black Mountain, taking Saturday’s 15km freestyle mass start event in 36:56.5. Sam Tarling of Dartmouth finished second in 37:41.0, and was runner-up to Patterson in both races. Dartmouth’s Silas Talbot was third (37:55.9), teammate Scott Lacy was fourth (38:00.6) and Rogan Brown of UVM fifth (38:00.9). With a 2-3-4 finish, Dartmouth captured the team event with 132 points to 124 for UVM. Williams College was third with 84 points.
