Vonn fastest in second downhill training in Cortina, Mancuso second again

Jan 20, 2011

Women’s downhill training in Cortina d’Amezzo, Italy wrapped up today (Jan. 20) as American Lindsey Vonn clearly led the way with the day’s fastest time by well over a second.

Vonn, the winner of the last two World Cup downhills, had a rare off day on the downhill track yesterday (29th) after narrowly escaping what would have been a high-speed crash in the first training run. The reigning Olympic and World Champion in the discipline showed her true colors today, finishing 1.37 seconds faster than any other.

“Cortina is definitely one of my favorite stops on the tour. It’s one of those courses you know like the back of your hand,” Vonn told Fisalpine.com. “You don’t have to really think twice about the course. I know what to do. I trust myself. So it’s kind of fun to push the limits and see what you’re capable of doing.”

Matching her training result from yesterday, American Julia Mancuso finished second today with a time of one minute, 41.50 seconds on a Olympia della Tofane course that racers and coaches say has more bumps and jumps than in years past. Mancuso won a super G here in 2007 and has collected four additional World Cup podiums in Cortina.

Austrian Elisabeth Goergle was third-fastest today followed by Italy’s own Johanna Schnarf in fourth.

Vonn’s leading time today was 1.51 seconds faster than the top time in yesterday’s training run (1:41.67) set by current overall leader, Germany’s Maria Riesch (seventh today). Vonn, who trails Riesch in the overall standings by 196 points (827 to 1023), won a downhill in Cortina in 2008 and came back last season to win both a downhill and a super G.

Behind Vonn and Mancuso, the U.S. Team again got encouraging results from Stacey Cook, Leanne Smith and Chelsea Marshall who finished 15, 18, 19. Teammate Laurenne Ross finished 31st.

Britt Janyk and Georgia Simmerling again led the Canadians in 26th and 35th, respectively.

World Cup racing begins tomorrow with a super G (canceled in Val d’Isere) before Saturday’s downhill. A second super G is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 23.
