Vonn leads opening St. Moritz training run in low visibility

Fog and light snowfall delayed the first downhill training run in St. Moritz, Switzerland, by 30 minutes earlier today. In relatively low visibility conditions, Lindsey Vonn was the fastest to complete the 2521-meter long downhill course, ahead of Italian Johanna Schnarf and Liechtenstein’s Tina Weirather.

Vonn won her 63rd World Cup race on Monday in Cortina d’Ampezzo, breaking the ladies’ all-time record for most World Cup victories. She told the press after the training run that this impressive achievement makes her even more excited to continue racing.

“I feel really good when I’m on course,” she commented. “I have a really good rhythm and timing. I have a great feeling for the speed. When everything feels so good you just want to keep racing. It’s a good place to be in.”

Vonn won the last downhill World Cup race held in St. Moritz, back in January of 2012. She can become the second female skier to win back-to-back downhill races in St. Moritz since Annemarie Moser-Proell accomplished the feat during two downhill World Cup races in St. Moritz in 1971 and 1973.

The track this season is different, however, from what the women have skied in the past, but Vonn appears up for the challenge going into the weekend after a strong opening training run.

“It’s a brand new track. I think the super G is definitely going to be very challenging because there is so much terrain, a lot of really blind turns,” said Vonn “But the downhill, I had a nice run today. It felt comfortable so I’m definitely confident for the downhill and we’ll just have to see at inspection for the super G.”

Schnarf trailed Vonn by 0.64 seconds, while Weirather in third was 0.75 seconds off the leading pace.

“The piste was good and the visibility wasn’t too bad, despite the clouds,” said Weirather of the conditions. “The fresh snow was more a problem for the course workers than for us. They did a great job preparing the hill.”

A second and final training run is scheduled for Friday.
