Vonn tops second downhill training in Zauchensee

Jan 07, 2011

Women’s World Cup downhill training continued today (Jan. 7) with a second run in Zauchensee, Austria ahead of tomorrow’s competition.

American Lindsey Vonn, who had yesterday’s second-fastest time, led all racers with today’s quickest time of one minute 46.86 seconds. Swede veteran Anja Paerson, who tied for a win here the last time the World Cup came through in 2009, followed in second almost a half second (0.40) behind.

Young Austrian racer Nicole Schmidhoffer (21) was third, 0.72 seconds back followed by teammate and yesterday’s training leader Anna Fenninger in fourth with a time of 1:47.59

Current World Cup overall leader, Germany’s Maria Riesch stepped up from 18th yesterday to land 13th today 1.61 seconds behind Vonn.

Vonn, who after earning the overall lead with downhill and super combined wins in Val d’Isere in mid-December, now stands second (186 point behind Riesch) following a chain of three DNFs in recent slalom races. The Vail, Colo. native is now looking to bounce back in the speed events and called snow conditions in Zauchensee perfect today. She has landed on the podium here five times.

Racers Looked more comfortable after yesterday’s run, as many upped the speed and knocked up to two seconds off of their times of a day ago.

Canadian Britt Janyk pulled in the 17th-fastest time ahead of Americans Julia Mancuso and Leanne Smith in 20th and 23rd, respectively. Chelsea Marshall fell high on the course and slid into the fence but was able to ski down and is expected to race tomorrow.

Tomorrow’s downhill begins at 11:45 CET/5:45 EST. A super G will follow on Sunday.
