WalchhoferMichael Walchhofer showed his season could click right back into high gear and the Canadian Cowboys seem to have found a better line in downhill training today (Jan. 28) at Chamonix, France.

Austrian Walchhofer beat Erik Guay for the top spot in training by a hundredth of a second while Thursday’s top skier, Klaus Kroell was third .25 back. Kitzbuehel winner Didier Cuche was fourth while overall World Cup leader Ivica Kostelic tied France’s own Yannick Bertrand for fifth. Guay’s Canadian teammate Manuel Osborne-Paradis was seventh.

Walchhofer, making a final swing around the World Cup circuit before retiring from competition had three wins before the end of December, but had not performed to the same standard in January finishing out of the top 10 in downhills at Wengen and failing to finish at Kitzbuehe1.

The Canadian speed team has barely gotten on track at all this season with just one top 10 to show and that coming from Osborne-Paradis at Val Gardena in mid-December.

Steven Nyman, in 22nd place contributed the top finish for a U.S. squad missing its top three players to injury. Travis Ganong was 27th.
