A MEN'S WORLD CUP
super combi race that was scrapped because of warm weather has been rescheduled for Dec. 10 in Reiteralm, Austria.
World Cup officials announced Wednesday that the men’s downhill and super combi races scheduled for Dec. 9-10 in Val d’Isere, France, were shelved because of a lack of snow, bringing to three the number of World Cup events canceled so far on account of unusually warm European weather.
“I did an investigation. I went 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle and all the way down to Sierra Nevada, I went east to west and there were no sites open to us,” said Guenter Hujara, the men’s World Cup race director. “We got this candidacy from the Austrian federation. Considering nothing else is open to us and their infrastructure is good and that we need the races, we decided to accept.”
The season-opening races on the glacier in Sölden, Austria, were wiped out because of heavy rain, and the women’s events set for St. Moritz, Switzerland, on Dec. 9-10 were canceled because of a lack of snow. The women also have races in Val d’Isere, but later in December.
FIS officials had been working with organizers in Aspen and Beaver Creek to stage some of the scrapped events in Colorado, but Hujara said there wasn’t enough sponsorship dollars for Colorado resorts to hold some of the canceled races.
“We would have preferred to have the races here in Beaver Creek, where the conditions are excellent, instead of traveling to Europe where I have to accept acceptable conditions,” Hujara said. “But we have a chance to have a race so we’ve decided to use it.”
The World Cup hasn’t announced the location and dates for the other canceled races yet.
