Weirather twists knee in training run, downhill start uncertain
Liechtenstein’s Tina Weirather, her nation’s flag bearer in the Opening Ceremony and a medal contender in the Olympic downhill, super G, and giant slalom races, twisted her knee in a crash during Sunday’s (Feb. 9) downhill training run and is being evaluated for injuries.
Weirather skied out at the top section of the course, just after the first intermediate. According to early reports in the Liechtenstein newspaper Vaterland, Weirather was immediately taken to a clinic for an evaluation on her right knee. No further information has been made available by team staff regarding her condition. However, other news outlets indicate the ligaments in her knee were unaffected but she may have suffered a tibial contusion, commonly known as a bone bruise. Weirather’s first race in the Sochi Olympic Games is the downhill, scheduled for Wednesday (Feb. 12). Her start in that event is now questionable.
