LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — The FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships will return to Whiteface Mountain in 2027. The event brings one of the sport’s top development championships back to one of North America’s most historic alpine venues.

Junior Worlds Return to Whiteface Mountain

The FIS Council confirmed Lake Placid as the host of the 2027 Junior Worlds during its first meeting after the FIS Congress. The championships will be held at Whiteface Mountain, the Olympic race venue located near Lake Placid.

For North American ski racing, the return has added meaning. In 1994, Lake Placid last hosted the Junior World Championships. That year, athletes from Canada and the United States delivered several memorable medal performances.

North Americans Made History in 1994

Canada’s Kevin Wert won the men’s downhill. Meanwhile, Jason Rosener of the United States finished third. The United States also earned a medal in the men’s slalom, where Chip Knight finished second. Today, Knight is U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s alpine development director.

However, the top North American performance belonged to Canada’s Melanie Turgeon. She produced one of the most impressive Junior World Championship showings in the event’s history. In all, Turgeon won five medals in five events. She took gold in giant slalom and combined, silver in super-G, and bronze in downhill and slalom.

As a result, Turgeon became the standout athlete of the 1994 Lake Placid championships. Her performance also remains one of the great achievements in Canadian junior alpine racing.

Lake Placid’s Global Ski Racing Legacy

Lake Placid also has deep international ski racing history. The region hosted the 1980 Olympic Winter Games. Since then, Whiteface Mountain has continued to serve as a major venue for elite alpine competition.

Now, the 2027 Junior World Championships will give a new generation of racers the chance to compete on the same stage. For athletes from Canada and the United States, it will also offer an opportunity to race in a global championship on North American snow.

A Future Stage With Historic Roots

The Junior World Championships have long served as a preview of future World Cup talent. Therefore, the return to Whiteface Mountain adds significance to the 2027 championships. It brings one of skiing’s most important development events back to a venue with Olympic history and a memorable Junior Worlds legacy.
