WJC – Manu Feller earns junior slalom crown

Austrian Manuel Feller claimed the gold medal in the final event of the 2013 World Junior Championships, using a first run lead to advantage to take the slalom.

It was a battle of attrition as more than half the field of 86 was eliminated in the first run and dozen exited in the second. The courses appeared to hold up well but some tough course sets and a demanding hill took their toll.

Six foot six Swiss skier Ramon Zenhaeusern earned the silver medal with the bronze going to Santeri Paloniemi of Finland. Two more Swiss made the top six and a third was ninth indicating the alpine country will not languish long after a disappointing World Cup season.

Bryce Bennett was the brightest light the American group had in 17th place.

Feller said he has spent time training this winter with World slalom champion Marcel Hirscher and had taken inspiration from that.

“Yes, I was training with Hirscher a lot his winter. He’s a pretty good skier and I am proud to train with him and look on him.”

He said taking gold was the perfect way to complete his junior career. Having failed to finish the slalom at last season’s World Junior Championships he was not overly sympathetic to those in the field who did the same this year.

“Yeah, that’s skiing,” he said. “The slope is pretty hard and the course was pretty turny in the second run. That was bad for some people.”

For himself, however, “It was a perfect day. The first run was pretty good. The second run was also good.”

The combined titles, determined on points from the downhill, slaloms and giant slaloms both went to Norway. Henrik Kristoffersen was the men’s winner and Ragnhild Mowinckel the womens.

About the Author: Hank McKee

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
