Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the upcoming Audi FIS Women’s World Cup races in Are, Sweden have been canceled after new recommendations from the Public Health Agency of Sweden. FIS has chosen to be fully compliant with the instructions and decisions made by the National and Regional Governments and their Health Authorities in order to prioritize the health and welfare of the athletes, the general public, and other participants.

“We are so sorry that we have to cancel the competitions that we have prepared for for so long. The current situation gives us no other option than to cancel,” said World Cup manager, Federik Broman.

A media alert was sent out saying that three members of the sponsor support team at the FIS Alpine World Cup have been placed under quarantine after experiencing symptoms of the Coronavirus. One member showed symptoms in Kvitfjell, Norway and immediately went into self-quarantine. He has since been tested positive, according to the alert.

The members of the support team traveled to Are and were immediately placed in quarantine without coming into contact with anyone in Are. FIS stated in their release that they are closely monitoring and actively following up on this situation announced late afternoon on March 11. Thanks to the procedures in place and the quick action by the Norwegian and Swedish medical staff, they do not believe that persons associated with the men’s or women’s Alpine World Cup have been affected.

The cancellation of Are officially marks the end of the women’s season, as they will not be replaced on the World Cup calendar.

This means that Federica Brignone has officially earned the overall crystal globe. Mikaela Shiffrin finished second in the overall standings, 153 points behind Brignone. Petra Vlhova finished in third. Brignone also earned the giant slalom overall crystal globe, followed by Vlhova and Shiffrin. Vlhova earned the slalom crystal globe by a mere 20 points over Shiffrin, who has not competed on the World Cup since her father’s sudden passing in February.

The FIS press office contributed to this report.
