The 2022-23 World Cup men’s speed events begin tomorrow, November 25th, in Lake Louise, Canada. The race will start at 2:30 pm Eastern and at 11:30 am on the West Coast. The Stifel US Alpine Team will enter seven of their best adrenalin addicts. Additionally, the Canadians have entered their best four.
In the USA, view the races live and replayed on the streaming service Ski and Snowboard Live. To watch all six of the men’s and women’s Lake Louise races click on the hyperlink and enter the discount code BLACKFRIDAY15 to receive a 15% discount.
Notably, with the long-term uncertainty of the Lake Louise speed events, the Zermatt/Cervinia cancelation was unfortunate but poetic justice. Fittingly “The Lake” will once host the first speed events of the World Cup season.
All eyes will be on 2021-22 Overall World Cup winner Marco Odermatt, Switzerland, and downhill title winner Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, Norway. However, expect there to be exciting performances from the North Americans, James Crawford, ACA, clocked the third fastest time in the final training run.
The reports from Lake Louise are that the surface is good and the added terrain after the top traverse will increase the difficulty of maintaining speed. The Lake Louise downhill always provides an exciting start to the speed event season and high average speeds.
Additionally, USST head men’s speed coach Randy Pelkey reports that because of all of the volunteers slipping the course, conditions have been improving and are “pretty good now.” He also mentions “Wind is in the forecast.” He continues, “Most of the guys have had a good preparation so the team is looking forward to good racing.”
As with any skiing event, gusting wind plays a significant factor, its role is amplified in speed events, but all you can do is hope to benefit from the variability.
Be prepared to be entertained by the world’s fastest skiers!
