Who is racing when and how to watch Sunday’s St Moritz super-G
St Moritz is delivering an exciting race series. The two downhill days showed just how challenging World Cup speed is. Tomorrow is the super-G. The current forecast is for a clear night and blue skies tomorrow morning. The Norwegians have set the St Moritz super-G, and the course crew is hard at work making it perfect.
There has been only one women’s super-G contested this season. Oddly the podium didn’t include an Italian. However, the winner was Swiss, and the local fans in St Moritz would love a home-country repeat. In her home country, it would be hard to cheer against the leader of the World Cup super-G standing, Corinne Suter.
Mikaela Shiffrin didn’t ski the super-G in Lake Louise because she was preparing for the Sestriere tech series. However, she is one of the favorites. Even though it will be her first super-G competition this season she is a proven winner. It is good practice to never count her out in any event. She has had two good days on the downhill in St Moritz and is confidently skiing.
Canadian Marie-Michele Gagnon is coming off an 8th-place finish in her home race in Lake Louise. Although the veteran struggles to find her speed in downhill races, she feels good on her super-G skis. Look for her to rebound into a good finish tomorrow.
Isabella Wright and Breezy Johnson have shown world-class speed on the St Moritz slope, so it wouldn’t surprise anyone if they find their way to a good result.
It will be Stifel US Alpine Team member Lauren Macuga’s inaugural World Cup super-G, exciting for any racers at any age.
The US has entered six competitors and the Canadians have entered three in the December 18th super-G.
