FIS Updates Wildcard World Cup Regulations for 2024/25 Season
The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) has revised the wildcard regulations for the 2024/25 World Cup season. These updated rules target athletes who have not competed for at least two seasons but have achieved major titles, such as an Olympic victory, a World Championship, an overall World Cup title, or a discipline title with at least five race wins. FIS implemented these changes during the autumn meetings in Zurich, and they officially took effect on October 3rd as part of the updated regulations.
New Wildcard Application Process
According to rule 3.2.1 of the World Cup regulations, eligible athletes can apply for a wildcard start in up to 20 races per season, excluding the World Cup finals. The athlete’s national federation must submit each application to the FIS General Secretariat at least five weeks before the race, ahead of the official registration deadline. FIS race directors, along with FIS General Secretary Michel Vion, will review and approve each application. Wildcard athletes will receive start number 31. If there are athletes on the start list with 500 or more World Cup Start List (WCSL) points, they will be positioned between start number 30 and the wildcard athlete.
Marcel Hirscher Applies for a Wildcard
Marcel Hirscher, now competing for the Netherlands, has submitted the only wildcard application so far. FIS approved his request under the previous regulations before the autumn meeting. Although Hirscher missed training for Sölden on October 27th due to bronchitis, he remains eligible to compete. If he intends to participate in the slalom races at Levi (November 17th) and Gurgl (November 24th), the Dutch federation must submit his additional applications in the near future.
