Fresh snow fell across parts of Alberta and British Columbia over the weekend, bringing the first signs of the 2026–27 winter season to several Canadian Ikon Pass destinations.
SkiBig3, Panorama Mountain Resort and terrain operated by CMH Heli-Skiing & Summer Adventures all reported fresh snowfall as colder temperatures moved into Canada’s high country.
The Canadian snowfall followed Crystal Mountain in Washington, which reported snow on August 29 and became the first Ikon Pass destination in the Northern Hemisphere to see flakes ahead of the 2026–27 winter season.
Snow Falls Across Alberta and British Columbia
At SkiBig3, winter-like conditions reached the higher elevations of Banff Sunshine and Lake Louise Ski Resort in Alberta.
Farther west in British Columbia, fresh snow also appeared near the summit of Panorama Mountain Resort, while CMH reported snowfall across its Bobbie Burns terrain.
The late-August snow is not an indication that ski season is about to begin, but the fresh coating across the Canadian Rockies offered an early reminder that fall and winter are getting closer.
At higher elevations, brief periods of snow aren’t unusual as temperatures begin to fluctuate toward the end of summer. Still, seeing the mountains turn white before September is enough to generate some excitement among skiers, coaches and programs beginning to look toward the coming season.
Fall Training Moves Into Focus
The timing comes as ski racers throughout the Northern Hemisphere begin shifting their attention toward fall training and the return to more consistent on-snow preparation.
Reliable early-season training terrain remains an important part of preseason planning for clubs, academies and national teams. European glaciers have traditionally played a significant role during the summer and fall months, but increasingly variable conditions and periodic closures have forced programs to remain flexible with their training plans.
For North American racers, the first snow in the Canadian Rockies doesn’t mean gates will be going in anytime soon. But it does signal that the transition toward winter has started.
With snow now appearing at Crystal Mountain as well as destinations across Alberta and British Columbia, the first hints of the 2026–27 Northern Hemisphere season are beginning to show.
After a long summer, that’s a sight ski racers are always happy to see.
