Crystal Mountain in Washington recorded its first snowfall of the 2026–27 season over the weekend, bringing an early taste of winter to the Pacific Northwest before August had even come to an end.
Snow fell across the upper elevations of the Washington resort on August 29, making Crystal Mountain the first Ikon Pass destination in the Northern Hemisphere to report snow ahead of the coming winter.
Snow Sticks at Higher Elevations
Most of the snowfall was concentrated higher on the mountain, with a fresh coating visible around Northway, Mountain Top and the terrain surrounding Forest Queen Express and Chair 6.
The Silver King, one of Crystal Mountain’s most recognizable peaks, picked up a noticeable dusting as temperatures dropped enough for snow to stick across the high alpine.
By the following morning, snow remained visible at elevation, offering a decidedly winter-like scene for late August.
While the snowfall is far from the beginning of ski season, seeing white on the peaks this early is always enough to get skiers thinking about the months ahead.
An Early Sign of the Changing Season
Late-summer snowfall at high elevations isn’t unheard of in the Pacific Northwest, but the timing still makes for a welcome sight as resorts and ski programs begin looking toward the 2026–27 season.
Crystal Mountain sits on the northeast side of Mount Rainier and reaches an elevation of approximately 7,000 feet. Its location and elevation can bring dramatic weather changes, even while summer conditions remain in the valleys below.
The August snow comes as ski racers across the Northern Hemisphere are beginning to transition toward fall training. Many programs are currently searching for reliable early-season snow, particularly as increasingly unpredictable conditions on European glaciers continue to complicate traditional summer and fall training plans.
For now, Crystal’s snowfall is mostly symbolic. But after a long summer, a little snow on the mountains is sometimes all it takes.
Winter is coming — even if the calendar still says August.
