Alterra Mountain Company is the first U.S.-based ski operator to achieve Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) verification. This milestone marks a major step forward in climate action across the global ski and snowboard industry. The announcement comes with the release of Alterra’s 2025 Forward Stance Impact Report. The report outlines progress in sustainability, workforce development, and community investment.

The company operates 19 mountain destinations across North America, including Winter Park, Mammoth Mountain, and Blue Mountain. It continues to focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving responsible operations.

Climate Leadership in the Ski Industry

Alterra’s SBTi verification places it among more than 11,000 organizations worldwide. These companies are aligning emissions reductions with climate science.

As part of its 2030 goals, Alterra aims to:

  • Cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% from a 2022 baseline
  • Source 100% renewable electricity by 2030
  • Have 67% of suppliers adopt science-based targets

The company reported a 32% year-over-year reduction in market-based emissions. This progress is driven by renewable energy investments, electrification, and improved snowmaking efficiency.

“Alterra Mountain Company takes its responsibility seriously to look out for our people, planet, and communities,” said Karen Sanford. She is the company’s Chief Legal & Social Responsibility Officer.

Investment in People and Mountain Communities

Alterra continues to expand its workforce and community programs.

Strengthening Safety and Responsibility

The company reported a 7% reduction in workplace injury rates. This follows new safety initiatives across its resorts. Alterra also expanded its cybersecurity and governance practices.

Why It Matters for Ski Racing and the Industry

Climate change continues to impact winter sports. As a result, sustainability initiatives like SBTi verification are becoming more important. They affect athletes, events, and resort operations.
