U.S. ski racing icon Bode Miller’s new reality TV show “The Superstars” began its summer run on ABC last night. The 32-year-old New Hampshire native and his pro athlete peers on the show, including Football wave maker Terrell Owens and WNBA star Lisa Leslie, were paired with Hollywood celebrities with little to no sports experience. Miller’s partner is “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” designer Paige Hemmis, who is known more for her pink power tools than her athletic prowess. Miller returns to the show as the 2002 defending champion.
The teams have converged at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas to face physical challenges including: kayaking, swimming and biking.
In last night’s premier the teams went head-to-head in two events. First, the “Run and Ride” demanded that contestants share one bicycle while one teammate ran over a 1.1 mile bridge. The teams could switch between running and riding as often at they liked but their clock wasn’t stopped until both competitors finished. Miller was clearly in it to win it, visibly exerting himself as he led the pack on the bike, while Hemmis struggled to match his intensity on foot. Miller, who opted out of competing in the last leg of this year’s World Cup tour, looked ragged after leaving the bike for his teammate and continuing on foot, admitting “that was a mistake,” between labored breaths. Despite Miller’s early struggles, and a post-race puke brake for the skiing ledged, the pair claimed fourth place, giving them a secure position going into the second challenge of the day.
“Kayak Rapids Relay” treated the stars to a quarter-mile artificial river kayak course. Once again Miller established an early lead, which Hemmis capitalized on and secured the win in the first heat. The second heat saw Miller and Hemmis finish second to ensure they were safe for the first round of elimination.
After the points were tallied the bottom two teams were tested on a boot-camp style obstacle course that sent Owens and his teammate, model Joanna Krupa, home early.
The show will continue to air on ABC, Tuesdays at 8pm EST.
