Who is racing, when and how to watch the Bormion super-G

The Bormio course has been set – the hill is fast, icy, dark, and even bumpier. The Bormio super-G trail is also wide, providing the course setter with multiple options. It is rare when most of the course doesn’t naturally set itself. But Bormio inspires considerable creativity, and it is always interesting. 

Because of the possible variations, until you see the course, it will be hard to predict who it will favor. We know the elite group the fastest racers will come from, but the course design could tell who is most likely to stand on the steps.

Certainly, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde and Marco Odermatt will be favored no matter how the course gets designed. 

North Americans to look for

When considering North American success, look to USA’s Ryan Cochran-Siegle and Canada’s James Crawford.

Crawford is one of the best this season. Today’s downhill podium will undoubtedly build his confidence. However, Crawford has yet to land on a super-G podium this season, but he has placed 10th and 11th.

Olympic silver medalist, Cochran-Siegle is one of the world’s best super-G skiers but has yet to score this season. He has a previous Bormio super-G victory, and his downhill results prove he’s skiing well. Additionally, he is good when it is fast, icy, dark, and bumpy.

It is also never a surprise when Travis Ganong has a podium day. Ganong is one of the best men’s speed circuit skiers, and Bormio rewards excellent skiing. Notably, it has become the custom this season to see River Radamus ski super-G. Radamus is an emerging talent that finished 16th this season in his hometown Beaver Creek race. He is fast, pushes hard, and is talented. He will find his way to a podium someday soon.

Erik Arvidsson scored in the downhill today, and the last time he scored in a downhill, he finished in the points the following day in super-G. Finally, Kyle Negomir is back on the World Cup circuit. He is one of two USA men to score super-G points this season. A podium would undoubtedly be a surprise, but a great result would be exciting but not unexpected. 

Canada has had significant super-G success this season. The current year’s super-G standings have three Canadians in the top 25. Crawford joins teammates Jeffrey Read, Brodie Seger, Trevor Philp, Riley Seger, and Broderick Thompson on the list of Canadian athletes who have scored in super-G this season. Crawford is ranked 8th; Read is sitting 20th; Brodie Seger is one point behind Read and ranked 21st. 

Fourteen North Americans will start tomorrow in the Bormio super-G. The USA and Canada both have seven athletes competing.
