Canada mourns cycling death of coach Jason Lapierre{mosimage}The alpine skiing families of Alberta and Canada are deeply saddened by the tragic accident that led to the death of Jason Lapierre, a professional alpine ski coach, in a cycling accident on the 1A Highway just east of Cochrane, Alberta, on July 19.
Lapierre, age 34, had coached athletes of all ages for the past 14 years in Ontario and Alberta. He spent the last seven years with the Calgary Alpine Racing Club (formerly Mount Norquay Racing Club) as head coach and program director. He was instrumental in building the CARC program from a very small club five years ago into the successful high-performance program it is today. During this time, the club produced several athletes that have moved on to the Alberta team and the Canadian alpine ski team.
Lapierre earned an honors degree in kinesiology and had a love of fitness that he passed on to his athletes. He was an avid road biker and triathlon athlete, competing at the national level for several years, encouraging his athletes to do the same.
