In this episode of the Skiing is Believing podcast, Alan and Matt chatted with Edie Thys Morgan, who used to be on the US Ski Team. Now, she’s a journalist and a mom to two young ski racers.
Edie scored a World Cup podium in 1991 in a Super-G from Furano, Japan. Before that, she had grown up in the Palisades Tahoe area and with three older siblings, it was always a case of chasing for Edie. Her older brother, Barry, was also briefly on the US Ski Team in 1983/84.
Additionally, Edie told the Skiing is Believing Podcast about her numerous recoveries from various injuries. Sadly, she blew her knee when she was 17 and 18, which forced her to move away from the downhill discipline earlier than she may have wanted, despite the fear factor she felt when pushing out of a downhill start gate.
Since then, Edie has held numerous journalistic positions for various websites and magazines in alpine ski racing on Ski Racing Media, and her website, Racer eX.
She shared several journalistic preferences: how she uses pen and paper to make important notes in an age when technology has taken over, and how this has changed since she wrote her first piece 30 years ago.
Edie also gave her thoughts on the current FIS World Cup scene and the ever-approaching return of Lindsey Vonn. Also, the current situation of the US Ski Team ahead of the Killington World Cup.
Towards the end of the episode, Edie, Alan, and Matt discussed the upcoming race weekend in Killington, Vermont where Mikaela Shiffrin attempts to win her 100th World Cup race. They also give their predictions for this weekend’s giant slalom and slalom.
