The FIS Council voted to ban the use of fluorinated wax across all FIS disciplines starting from the 2020-21 season onwards at their annual fall meetings in Constance, Germany.

Fluorinated wax has come under scrutiny in recent years due to various environmental and health risks associated with its widespread use in the skiing and industrial worlds. According to the FIS decision, a specialist FIS Working Group led by FIS experts Atle Skaardal (alpine) and Pierre Mignerey (cross-country) as well as members of the ski and wax industry will be formed to establish the regulations and control procedures going forward.

The Norwegian Ski Federation banned the use of fluoros for all racers U16 and under last season and was used as a test case by FIS to determine if a widespread ban on the wax was feasible going forward.

Among other things, the newly formed committee will work to develop an easily administered and reliable way of testing for fluoros on skis as well as how to enforce these new rules at competitions.
