A 23rd-place result in the women’s super G in Lenzerheide on Saturday will prevent Francesca Marsaglia from finishing within the top-25 discipline ranking needed to qualify for the Courchevel World Cup finals. After the race, Marsaglia announced her retirement.

The 32-year-old speed specialist from the Italian team can look back on 225 World Cup races, two Olympics (2014 and 2022) and five World Championships (2011, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021). On the World Cup, Marsaglia made it onto the podium once, in 2019 in the downhill from Lake Louise, won by Nicole Schmidhofer ahead of Mikaela Shiffrin.

The 2021-22 season was a difficult one for Marsaglia: “I often found myself chasing goals and things instead of training and competing for my own pleasure,” she wrote. “My body has also made it clear to me that I am no longer able to compete at the highest level,” adding, “I want to become a mother soon.”
