Gurgl Men’s Slalom: Start List, Daily Program & Key Storylines
The men return to World Cup slalom action Saturday, Nov. 22, in Gurgl, Austria, for the second race of the Olympic season. The field is notably smaller than usual — just 59 racers — after many athletes remained in Levi for Europa Cup racing. A compact start list raises second-run odds and amplifies the pressure for nations chasing early-season momentum.
Last weekend’s opener in Levi delivered a spectacular start to the season: Lucas Pinheiro Braathen won for Brazil, Clément Noël finished second, and Finland’s Eduard Hallberg earned a breakthrough podium. Great Britain produced one of its strongest team results ever, with Laurie Taylor finishing fourth as GB Snowsport out-performed the Alpine powerhouses of Switzerland, Austria, and Norway.
Now the tour moves to Gurgl — a slope where Clément Noël won last year, ahead of Sweden’s Kristoffer Jakobsen and Norway’s Atle Lie McGrath. All three return on Saturday with a chance to reclaim the podium.
Elite 7 — First Run Start List
1 — Lucas Pinheiro Braathen (BRA – Atomic)
2 — Clément Noël (FRA)
3 — Henrik Kristoffersen (NOR)
4 — Timon Haugan (NOR)
5 — Atle Lie McGrath (NOR – HEAD)
6 — Loïc Meillard (SUI)
7 — Fabio Gstrein (AUT – Atomic)
This is one of the strongest opening groups of the season — last weekend’s Levi podium, last year’s Gurgl podium, the defending slalom globe winner, and Austria’s top home-snow threat.
Stifel U.S. Ski Team
The United States starts three athletes:
18 — Ben Ritchie (HEAD)
41 — Jett Seymour (Atomic)
45 — Luke Winters
Ritchie is well-placed to push for a second run, while Seymour and Winters will charge hard to qualify for a second run.
Great Britain
After last weekend’s historic Levi performance, Great Britain enters Gurgl with real momentum.
12 — Dave Ryding (HEAD)
27 — Laurie Taylor (HEAD)
32 — Billy Major (HEAD)
Taylor’s fourth place in Levi last week remains one of the highlight performances of the early season.
Canada
Canada fields one racer on Saturday:
56 — Erik Read (Atomic)
Read will look to capitalize on the smaller field and chase an early-season second run.
Course Setters
First run: Tomas Karlsson (SWE)
Second run: Andreas Kollenborg (NOR)
