Who is racing in the Friday, January 12th Altenmarkt-Zauchensee women’s super-G, when, and how to watch?
The first Altenmarkt-Zauchensee World Cup race was held in 1980, but the highlight was the FIS World Cup Final in 2002.
In Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria, the third women’s World Cup super-G is on January 12th, replacing the canceled St. Moritz event. Two women’s super-Gs have been completed this season, offering only a glimpse into the upcoming battle for supremacy.
In the inaugural clash at St. Moritz on December 8, 2023, Italian sensation Sofia Goggia clinched victory, closely pursued by Austrian Cornelia Huetter and Switzerland’s reigning super-G discipline champion, Lara Gut-Behrami. Mikaela Shiffrin, a formidable force from the Stifel US Ski Team, secured the fourth position.
Shifting the battleground to Val d’Isère, France, on December 17, 2023, Italian Federica Brignone seized the top spot, flanked by Norway’s Kajsa Vickhoff Lie and Italy’s Sofia Goggia on the podium. Notably, Shiffrin grappled with challenges and failed to finish the course, holding the 11th discipline rank with 50 points.
Sofia Goggia spearheads the season’s discipline rankings after two races, with her teammate Federica Brignone trailing closely, a mere 15 points adrift. Austria’s Cornelia Huetter secures the third spot, trailing Goggia by 30 points.
With nine more super-Gs on the horizon, the season’s discipline title race remains wide open. International talent intensifies the battle for discipline supremacy, with only two races completed.

Top five 2024 season women’s World Cup super-G standings

Mikaela Shiffrin will not attend
However, Shiffrin has announced she will not participate in the Altenmarkt-Zauchensee series this weekend. In a statement, she expressed her disappointment at missing out on the event, citing that she is still not fully recovered from a recent cold. In consultation with her team, Shiffrin has decided to prioritize her health and energy, opting to sit out of the races in Zauchensee. She emphasized the significance of the Altenmarkt-Zauchensee series, acknowledging it as a big target for her due to its unique combination of fun and challenging elements. However, recognizing her current health condition, Shiffrin has focused on healing and preparing for the upcoming Flachau, Jasna Cortina d’Ampezzo, and Kronplatz races. Despite the setback, Shiffrin remains determined to return to top form for the challenges ahead.
North American with 2023-24 season super-G success
Shifting focus to North Americans and the Stifel US Ski Team, standout performer Lauren Macuga, 21, scored in both super-G races this season, securing 30th in St. Moritz and an impressive 17th in Val d’Isère. Currently, Macuga holds the 24th rank in the season’s super-G standings.
Teammate Keely Cashman signals a return to form with a commendable 24th place in St. Moritz. However, an unfortunate non-finish in Val d’Isère places her at 35th in the super-G discipline for the season.

Among other North Americans, Valérie Grenier, a two-time GS winner and recent victor in Kranjska Gora, showcased a strong performance in St. Moritz, finishing 14th. However, like Shiffrin and Cashman, she did not finish in Val d’Isère.
With nine more super-Gs looming, the season’s discipline title race remains wide open. With only two races completed, the stage is set for international talent to leave their mark and heighten the intensity of the battle for discipline supremacy.
