In the latest episode of the Skiing is Believing podcast summer series, brought to you by Ski Racing Media, Alan Rigg and Matt Garcka had the privilege of welcoming former American downhiller and Ski & Snowboard Club Vail coach, AJ Kitt.
Discover how AJ first got his start in skiing and racing at the resort where his parents worked as ski instructors, and how that early foundation propelled him to success on the international stage. AJ also reflected on joining the U.S. Ski Team during a time of transition for the team, which he believes mirrors the current evolution within the Stifel U.S. Ski Team.
Matt, Alan, and AJ also had an in-depth conversation about how the sport, particularly downhill, has evolved over the past 30 years, from AJ’s racing days in the eighties and nineties to today’s downhill circuit. He discussed key course changes, the shift in the typical body type of a downhiller, and the variety of racers who have found success in the discipline.

AJ shared his thoughts on the next generation of athletes, focusing specifically on the men’s side of the Stifel U.S. Ski Team, and offered ideas for how the team can continue progressing.
Drawing from his experiences working with U21 racers in his current role at Ski & Snowboard Club Vail, he reflected on what he’s learned about developing younger talent.
While acknowledging that the immediate future may present some challenges, AJ expressed confidence in another strong season for Team USA, backed by the experience and momentum building toward the next Olympic campaign.
As always, Matt finished with quick-fire questions. Matt asked AJ who his favorite current North American racer is and other questions that sparked interesting responses. Tune in!
