DEER VALLEY, UTAH — It’s official. Lindsey Kildow and Thomas Vonn tied the knot on Saturday, marking the first marriage among the current crop of women on the U.S. Alpine Ski Team.
In the ski world, the marriage of a few big-time racers is a big deal. “It’s the first wedding of the new generation,” U.S. Ski Team member Resi Stiegler told Ski Racing magazine.
The couple met about five years ago in Park City, Utah. Vonn, 31, now a ski team alum, spends much of his time traveling with Kildow, who will turn 23 on Oct. 18 and is one of the top speedsters in the world. Kildow, who has changed her name to Lindsey Vonn, was in the running for the World Cup overall title last year when a partial ACL tear sidelined her a month before the season concluded. This last New Year’s Eve, Vonn proposed to Kildow in Kirchberg, Austria, during the fireworks display.
So when the “till death do us part” day arrived, it seemed appropriate for the two racers to receive a bit of snow. The ceremony was held at Silver Lake Lodge in Deer Valley, Utah. A storm blew through the resort the night before, dusting the fall foliage trees with snow.  Inside the lodge at about 6 p.m., the couple said their vows in front of about 100 friends and family. Most of Kildow’s current teammates were in attendance, including Julia Mancuso, Stiegler, Caroline Lalive, Stacey Cook and Sarah Schleper. Vonn, a former super G and giant slalom racer on the ski team, was surrounded by former teammates such as Erik Schlopy, Dane Spencer, Jess Marshall and Wade Bishop.
Prior to the vows, Reverend Michelle Butz gave a few examples from the couple about why they love each other. According to Kildow, Vonn was “perfect” and had a wonderful personality. And Vonn said Kildow, with just her eyes, will find him in a crowd and make him feel loved, and every day she will kiss and hug him like she hadn’t seen him in months.
After the short service, the crowd went downstairs for cocktails. Ski team member Cody Marshall said this was the first wedding that he had attended that meant something. His brother, Jesse, was a groomsman. “They’re just family,” he said about the couple.
Bridesmaid Vanessa Larsen said the two make a great couple because they are “big dorky cheese balls.” Other wedding revelers agreed, as the couple was giggling throughout the ceremony.
Jessica Kelley, a member of the ski team, said they “have become more and more alike in the time I have known them. When they are not together, they have mannerisms that show up that remind me of the other one. … I guess I notice it more in Lindsey. She’ll say something and it will be like it’s coming straight out of Vonn’s mouth.”
After cocktails, it was dinner and dancing. The favorite tribute of the night came from Vonn’s younger brother, Christian, who gave a David Letterman-esque speech about the top 10 reasons why it will always be good to be married to Vonn. The crowd favorite: Because Lindsey will always be the fastest skier in the relationship.
Then most people went to the couple’s favorite Park City club, Celsius Lounge, where socializing and dancing extended into the wee hours.
“It was the perfect wedding,” said bridesmaid and ski team member Katie Hitchcock. “It wasn’t too long or drawn out, and everybody was having a great time.”
