Who is racing when, and how to watch Madonna di Campiglio: Photo credit GEPA
At one time Alberto Tomba was the king of World Cup slalom and drew tens of thousands of his crazy fans to Madonna di Campiglio. Undoubtedly, this is a fantastic race venue, and the fans are fanatics. Notably, Madonna di Campiglio started hosting races in 1949 and hosted its first World Cup in 1969. It is one of the 15 original resorts to host the Alpine World Cup. The race is a classic but it is best experienced as a night race.
The list of winners includes overall globe winners Gustavo Thoeni, Ingemar Stenmark, Phil Mahre, Alberto Tomba, Bode Miller, and Ivica Kostelić. The winners’ roster is a who’s who of ski racing history.
Sources with the FIS say the Madonna di Campiglio slope is in excellent condition and has been injected twice. They are also reporting that the hill has a lot of water in the snow, and they are hoping for clear skies and a great race.
The slalom tour is ready to engage fully
For the men’s World Cup slalom racers, this is only the second competition of this season. Their season starts late and gains intensity through January. In the opening slalom of the season, Lucas Braathen was in a class of his own. He won over the very talented Manuel Feller by 0.84 seconds.
Was that a wake-up call for the rest of the competitors? Did they leave France and immediately go to work to improve their craft? We will likely have an answer on Thursday, December 23rd. Undoubtedly, we will witness amazing skiing on a wonderful slope.
For North Americans, the night race means we are treated to live viewing after the sun rises. Seven athletes will represent North America in Madonna di Campiglio, three from the United States and four from Canada. Both Luke Winters, USA, and Erik Read of Canada will start among the top 30.
