The Flachau slalom World Cup on Wednesday marks an important retirement. At the age of 39, Manfred Moelgg has announced that this will be his last race on the World Cup circuit.

Over the course of his career, Moelgg has been on the podium 20 times. The Italian even finished third place in the battle for the crystal globe in the 2007-08 season. In addition to his World Cup results, he competed in nine world championships, in which he collected three medals. All this is to say Moelgg has had a noteworthy impact on the ski racing world over his many years of competing.

For many professional athletes, retirement can be bittersweet. This feeling is true for Moelgg too.

In an Instagram post, Moelgg said, “I write these lines with a strange feeling but still with a smile. They were fantastic years in which I could do what I love since I was a child! It’s hard for me to describe my feelings right now and those that are yet to come.”

The upcoming race in Flachau was originally scheduled to be held in Zagreb, the venue in which Moelgg won a slalom in 2017. This was his third and most recent World Cup win, he also won two slaloms in 2008 and 2009.

He closed his announcement with these words: “I hope you had lots of fun because I had a great time!! See you at the start for one last time.”
