Marcel Hirscher training gates, comeback rumored

Marcel Hirscher, the eight-time overall champ who retired in 2019, caused a stir this week when he was seen training gates in Reiteralm. While the Hirscher camp is not confirming a comeback at this time, there was obvious speculation, and rumors have circulated that the Austrian star is targeting a return.

ÖSV men’s trainer Andreas Puelacher downplayed the possibility of a comeback but didn’t rule it out.

“Marcel trained with us, he was part of the giant slalom. He enjoyed it, he wanted to go skiing again. What I saw in the pictures is still in shape,” Puelacher told Austrian media.

“Marcel was at the Reiteralm during training with our giant slalom athletes,” he added. “He wanted to go skiing again and it was fun too. From what I’ve seen he’s still in good shape, but we’re still a long way from a comeback, so we didn’t talk about that at all. Marcel has always enjoyed racing, but you shouldn’t read ‘coffee brew’ there. We’re waiting now to see if he’s really interested, but we’ll only see that in the future. Of course we would like to have a Marcel Hirscher on the team.”

The 31-year-old from Salzburg also posted a video on Instagram and wrote “That’s what it is about.”
