Marcel Hirscher rules out Olympic-season return

Marcel Hirscher has officially ruled out a return to World Cup racing this winter, confirming he will not compete during the Olympic season or appear at the Games.

The announcement ends months of speculation surrounding the eight-time overall World Cup champion’s attempted comeback following a serious knee injury.

In a short video posted on Instagram, Hirscher said his recovery from a torn cruciate ligament has not progressed to a level that would allow him to compete at World Cup speed.

“The truth is, it’s just not possible,” Hirscher said. “The pace I can maintain isn’t World Cup-worthy.”

The Salzburg native raced his entire Hall-of-Fame career for Austria before attempting a return under the Dutch flag, his mother’s native country. He had initially targeted a January comeback, but a calf injury around Christmas forced a two-week training break, further delaying his progress.

“That doesn’t exactly help regain speed and confidence,” Hirscher said. “When I do compete in World Cup races again, I want to do it properly.”

Hirscher said he will continue training and reassess his future, but there is currently no timetable for a return to competition.

His decision stands in sharp contrast to Lindsey Vonn, whose return from retirement has been a clear success. Vonn is racing as a member of the Stifel U.S. Ski Team, remains fully active on the World Cup tour, and enters the Olympic season as a gold-medal favorite.

Unlike Marcel Hirscher, who will sit out the Olympic winter entirely, Vonn continues to build momentum at precisely the right moment in the Olympic cycle.

For Hirscher, the door remains open beyond this season—but the Olympic winter will pass without one of the most dominant athletes in alpine skiing history back in the start gate.
