Fast Start Ends in a Heavy Fall
Mattia Casse set the fastest first intermediate time in the opening downhill training for this weekend’s World Cup races in Kvitfjell. Moments later, he crashed into a gate and landed in the safety nets. The 35-year-old Italian, who won a Super-G in Val Gardena in December, suffered an open fracture of his right elbow. He was taken to a hospital in Lillehammer. Training paused for about 20 minutes after the crash.
Medical Plan and Recovery Timeline
Casse will travel to Milan on Thursday for further evaluation. Doctors will determine the next steps, but surgery is unavoidable. The timing and location remain undecided. No clear timeline exists for his return.
Despite the injury, Casse remains optimistic. “It’s part of the game – commented Casse. Of course, it would have been better if it hadn’t happened. I remain positive, and it may also be that it’s not all over for this season. I will evaluate together with the doctors.”
Impact on Super-G Title Race
Casse sits second in the Super-G standings but will surely miss Sunday’s race in Kvitfjell. Because of that, although not mathematically decided, baring a miracle, Marco Odermatt will secure the Super-G crystal globe before the final race. Odermatt leads by 181 points, making a comeback nearly impossible even if Casse raced.
A Strong Season Interrupted
Casse has five top-10 finishes this season, including a Super-G victory in Val Gardena. He has already secured enough points to qualify for the World Cup Finals. His best downhill result came in Bormio, where he finished fourth. He ranks 12th in the downhill standings, and his absence will be felt.
