Vlhová’s Comeback Progresses, but Saalbach is Out of Reach

JASNA, Slovakia — Olympic skiing champion Petra Vlhová continues her recovery journey, one year after a devastating injury during the World Cup giant slalom on home snow in Jasna. On Jan. 20, 2024, the Slovakian skier tore her cruciate and medial ligaments in her right knee during the first run, requiring surgery and months of intensive rehabilitation.

Despite steady progress, Vlhová will not compete at the Alpine Ski World Championships in Saalbach, Austria, from Feb. 4-16. Her coach, Mauro Pini, confirmed the news in a statement published by sport.aktuality.sk. “The good news is that the knee is responding positively to the December therapy,” Pini said. “We are finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel. However, time is moving quickly, and the World Championships are approaching inexorably.”

No Medal Contention in 2025

Pini emphasized that while Vlhová is making daily progress, the team’s goal of competing for medals remains out of reach. “We regret to announce that Petra will not be participating. We are not yet ready to compete for top spots at such an event, but Petra is already looking forward to a new challenge in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina,” he said.

Vlhová’s recovery has been marked by setbacks and extended rehabilitation; she is working to regain full physical condition and return to the form that earned her multiple podiums at previous World Championships.

A Decorated Career on Pause

Vlhová is one of the most accomplished skiers of her generation. At the 2019 World Championships in Åre, Sweden, she claimed gold in the giant slalom, silver in the alpine combined, and bronze in slalom, becoming the first Slovakian to win a world title. In 2021, she added two silver medals in Cortina d’Ampezzo: one in slalom and another in the combined event.

Her absence in Saalbach is significant for Slovakia and the competition overall. Rivals like Mikaela Shiffrin, who has not confirmed her participation, have also been fixtures on the World Championship podium in recent years.

Eyes on Cortina 2026

As Vlhová shifts her focus to the 2026 Winter Games, she is determined to write a new chapter in her career. “A new chapter is now beginning for Petra,” Pini said. “She is already setting her sights on the Olympics in Cortina.”

The Cortina venue holds special significance for Vlhová, having been the site of her 2021 World Championship success. Fans will be eager to see her back on the slopes, chasing medals at the pinnacle of her sport.
