Plate takes three titles at Masters Summer Nats
MT. HOOD, Ore. — Greg Plate and Rada Nordstrand blazed to wins in slalom, giant slalom and combined at the 20th running of the USSA Rooly Masters Summer Fun Nationals on July 26-27. Plate, a 20-year-old New Hampshire native and University of New Hampshire freshman, validated a summer of training and coaching with Peak Performance and Hurricane Racing Camps with the wins, while Rada Nordstrand, a Class 3 Russian transplant from Alaska, served notice that she will be a contender on the national masters ski racing scene.
In testimony to the “organize it and they will come” axiom, more than 100 masters ski racers descended on the Palmer Snowfields, high astride the slopes of Mt. Hood, Oregon, to indulge in some training, see ski racing friends and get an adrenaline rush at the Rooly Summer Fun Nationals. They came from locations as diverse as Alaska and North Carolina and were not disappointed, as the weekend brought weather as good as last year’s weather was bad.

MT.
Masters racers started migrating to the snowfields early in the week to take in a few days of training, and by the Friday evening welcome party, masters racers even outnumbered the skateboarders in the tiny town of Government Camp, located at the foot of the access road.
Hundreds of pounds of salt kept the snow hard and fast for both runs of the opening giant slalom, despite the bright sunshine and warming temperatures. Greg Plate had seen and respected the level of skiing shown by the better masters racers, but wasn’t nervous about representing the younger generation. “I’ve been out here training since June 1,” Plate said. “I thought it would be a good opportunity to get a race start. It’s a good environment. Everyone takes it pretty seriously, but it’s still laid back and everyone has a good time.”
Plate did his part in the first run of giant slalom by holding off race sponsor Franz Fuchsberger from Vail, who is 30 years his senior, by just over a second, and then withstanding a second-run charge by Minnesotan Peter Maxwell to post an overall time of 1 minute, 16.02 seconds. Maxwell overtook Fuchsberger for second with a time of 1:19.07, leaving Fuchsberger three one-hundredths of a second in arrears in third.
Among the eye-opening performances of the day, Class 7 racer Cliff Cunha from Sun Valley, made the Superseed (top 10 finishers in the first run) finishing10th overall, while Mark Sertl, a Class 6 warrior from New York, placed eighth.
Over on the C/D course, Rada Nordstrom jumped out to the early lead and then cruised to victory over Class 5 PNSA racer Anna Nystrom to take her class and the overall win with a total time of 1:27.75. Nystrom, one of the mainstays of the course crew, put down her wrench and drill long enough to finish in 1:28.47, while Class 4 racer Heather Black from Sun Valley garnered third place honors.
Also running on the C/D course were the older men with class wins earned by 86-year-old John Keleher, the PNSA racer well known for his towering “Cat in the Hat” hat worn to most awards ceremonies, and new Class 7 freshman Keith Thompson. Thompson came out on top of a close race with friend and rival Rich Robertson.
It was a competitor from upstate New York, John Keleher, who took the honors for, well, just competing. Born In 1920, Keleher allowed that he had attended the summer race off and on over the years and that “an airline pilot friend” had made it possible for him travel down from Seattle. Sipping a dark lager, Keleher said that a number of years ago Daron Rahlves had autographed a poster for him with the inscription, “live to ski.”
“When I saw him last year, he autographed a poster, ‘ski to live.’ I guess that is what I am doing,” the octagenarian said.
If anyone finished out of the ribbons on Saturday, chances were they didn’t go home empty-handed. The swag-filled banquet and awards ceremony provided giveaways for everyone, and multiple offerings in the case of the North Carolina contingent of eight, whose table was buried under a pile of T-shirts, hats and goggles. “We bought our tickets early,” said a smiling Jill Trulsen. “They must have drawn from the bottom.”
Race organizer Meri Stratton also honored those who had participated in every race of the 20-year history of the event. Included were Stratton, Dave Prochazka, Oliver Lajoie, Anna Ozuna and Joseph Mucci. Receiving “close enough” mention for having attended 19 of 20 events was Knut Olberg, chief of race on Sunday and perennial class contender.
Racers awoke to a cold, driving rain on Sunday morning. Driven by a combination of compulsion and optimism, they ignored the soaking and loaded the lifts for the slalom race. Their determination was rewarded when they broke into clear, cloudless skies on the upper lift. The course crew, consisting primarily of racers, again applied tons of salt, with ego-slalom conditions resulting throughout both runs.
The ante in the slalom was upped for Plate with the addition of two additional young hotshots: Scott Veenis, who races for the University of Utah, and U.S. development team prospect Sam Coffey of Aspen. Plate took care of business early by winning the first run by 1.56 seconds over Veenis, and then cruised to a winning time of 1:14.15. Veenis held on for second with a time of 1:16.87, while Coffey held the older masters racers at bay, posting a 1:17.84.
Class 3 Northern Division racer Toby Chapman was fastest among the masters mortals, riding a fast second run to jump into fourth overall, leaving ex-college teammate and friend Peter Maxwell in fifth. Proving that aging athletes still possess a few fast twitch muscle fibers, Class 6 racer Bill Skinner made the Superseed and placed 10th overall.
The women and older men also enjoyed the perfect racing conditions, especially Rada Nordstrand, who once again was the fastest masters racer on the C/D course, albeit by the smallest of margins. With a total time of 1:37.66, Nordstrand eked out a 0.04-second margin of victory over Anna Nystrom. Taos, New Mexico Class 5 speedster Carolynne Chandler of Taos, New Mexico, was third fastest for the day with a time of 1:43.93.
The booty
at the post-race awards party was plentiful for Plate and Nordstrand. They were honored for winning the Putzi Cup, given to the men’s and women’s slalom winners, and their names were also added to the Skoch Cup for taking the combined titles. The Skoch Cup, named in honor of race founder Bob Skoch, rivals hockey’s Stanley Cup in size and is engraved with the overall and class combined winners over the 20-year history of the Cup.
At the final awards ceremony Plate expressed his admiration for the level of racing shown by the masters and added, “It’s great to see so many good ski racers at this age. It shows that there’s still plenty of ski racing after college.”
With tired legs and a good sunburn, masters racers headed home, already making plans for a return showing in 2009.
