Read dominates final men’s NorAm of the season en route to overall title

Canada’s Erik Read has been nothing short of dominant on the men’s NorAm circuit this season. After a less than stellar 2015 saw Read dropped by the Canadian national team, he chose to take his talents to the University of Denver, splitting his winter time between the Pioneers and various World Cup races. In addition to NCAA slalom and team titles, Read managed to finish the 2016 season with NorAm overall and slalom titles as well as taking a victory in the final race of the season in Vail, Colorado.

Sunday’s slalom saw Read take the win with a total time of 1:52.47 seconds, 0.53 seconds ahead of American independent racer Robby Kelley in second. Read’s compatriot, Phil Brown, managed to land in third place, 0.70 seconds back. Top junior on the day was Canadian development team member Jack Crawford in seventh, 1.53 seconds back.

Read’s victory sealed his slalom title by 103 points over American national team member Tim Kelley, who finished second in the standings for the second year in a row. Read and Kelley are now guaranteed World Cup starting rights in every World Cup slalom next season.

Read also took the coveted NorAm overall title by more than 200 points over a pair of juniors in Crawford and American World Junior downhill champion Erik Arvidsson. The winner of the overall title is guaranteed World Cup starting rights in every event for the following season. Seeing that Read has made the flip-30 in both slalom and GS on the World Cup, this title will surely take some pressure off as he will not have to worry about fighting for starting spots week in and week out on the World Cup.

“Perfect bluebird day to cap off the NorAm season with a win and my best result ever as well as both the slalom and overall titles!” Read posted on his Instagram account following the race. “Thanks to every one that believed in me this last year.”

Many of the athletes that competed in this season’s NorAm circuit will now head to their respective national championship series. SkiRacing.com will be providing daily coverage of the U.S. Alpine Championships in Sun Valley, Idaho, March 22-27.
