The Austrian Ski Federation Conference of Presidents voted today in support of the region of Saalbach-Hinterglemm over St. Anton as the next Austrian applicant to host the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. Should Saalbach-Hinterglemm be awarded the event, it would be the second FIS Alpine World Ski Championships for the area. As early as 1991, the famous Salzburg ski resort hosted a successful World Ski Championships.

“First of all I would like to say I have total confidence in both the application of Saalbach-Hinterglemm as well as that of St. Anton am Arlberg. The Conference of Presidents has now decided to go with Saalbach-Hinterglemm in the international application. As we have seen, the meticulousness with which the internal candidacy has been prepared and which organizational know-how is present in those responsible, we are convinced the region of Saalbach-Hinterglemm (will meet) international standards,” said Austrian Ski Federation President Peter Schroecksnadel.

The next available FIS Alpine World Ski Championships up for bid is the event in 2023, as 2017 has been awarded to St. Moritz, 2019 to Are, and Cortina is currently the lone candidate for 2021. Whether the Austrian Ski Federation will use Saalbach-Hinterglemm to apply for the Alpine Championships in 2023 or later is yet to be determined.
