Following Zermatt’s recent closure, the Saas-Fee glacier ski area will also temporarily suspend summer ski operations because of persistent high temperatures and deteriorating glacier conditions.
Aug. 9 will be the final day of operations before the closure takes effect on Monday, Aug. 10. Resort officials said the ski area will remain closed until further notice.
In a statement released Thursday, Saas-Fee officials cited ongoing heat and the resulting changes to snow and glacier conditions as the reason for the shutdown.
“Due to the persistently high temperatures and the resulting changes in snow and glacier conditions, the summer ski area will be temporarily closed from Monday, Aug. 10, 2026, until further notice.”
Resort officials said the safety of guests and employees remains the top priority. Despite extensive preparation work, they said the current conditions no longer allow the slopes and glacier infrastructure to meet the required quality and safety standards.
The closure follows a similar decision by neighboring Zermatt, which suspended glacier skiing on Aug. 1 after unusually warm summer weather affected glacier operations.
Saas-Fee officials said they will continue monitoring conditions and will announce when temperatures and glacier conditions allow skiing operations to resume.
The closure also affects ski teams training on the glacier. Resort officials said teams with existing bookings will be contacted over the coming days with information regarding next steps and refund arrangements.
