In the third episode of the new season on the Skiing is Believing podcast, Alan and Matt had the absolute honor of welcoming the five-time overall World Cup winner and four-time World Champion, Marc Girardelli.
Having been born in Austria, he was involved with their youth and development team until he was 12, when he made the decision to switch to Luxembourg. He goes into great detail about this decision in the interview, sharing his reasons for switching national teams much earlier than many other racers who have made similar transitions.
Girardelli also told the podcast what it was like working his way through the ski racing system before making his World Cup debut in 1979, at age 16. Then, to winning his first FIS World Cup race over 4 years later in Sweden, clinching onto the victory over the home legend, Ingemar Stenmark, for the first time.
Marc spoke very highly of several current racers discussing Marco Odermatt’s and Cyprien Sarrazin’s approaches to racing. He also told us about some recent experiences with his long-time racing pals and the importance of staying in touch with people from your past.
At the conclusion of the interview, Marc discusses the various ways he remains engaged in the sport and his new clothing line. By the end of the conversation, you’ll discover which European resort has chosen his apparel for their staff.
