Who is racing in the Stifel Killington Cup GS, when, and how to watch the women’s 2nd World Cup giant slalom of the season.
As the world’s ski racing community transitions from the recent competitions in Sölden, Austria, and Levi, Finland, the spotlight turns to the much-anticipated Stifel Killington Cup in Vermont.
Mikaela Shiffrin currently leads the 2024 overall standings by a mere 30 points. However, Slovakia’s Petra Vlhová has been displaying impressive speed lately, indicating her strong motivation and readiness to be her best. This sets the stage for an exciting season-long competition between these two skiing titans. It’s worth noting that Shiffrin boasts two giant slalom season titles. On the other hand, while Vlhová is highly capable, she has yet to secure a season giant slalom title and is hungry to do so.
In the inaugural women’s Giant Slalom of the 23/24 season in Sölden, Swiss standout Lara Gut-Behrami clinched a tight win, highlighting her outstanding skill in a challenging field that included formidable competitors 2nd place Federica Brignone from Italy and 3rd place Slovakia’s Petra Vlhová. The women’s giant slalom continues to stand out as one of the most fiercely contested events in the sport.
The thrill of the Sölden Giant Slalom sets the stage for this weekend’s GS in Killington, Vermont, marking the beginning of the North American leg of the World Cup. For enthusiasts in the United States, this offers a prime opportunity to witness the world’s best skiers in action, all during the light of day. The excitement is palpable as the Superstar Kilington venue prepares to host the next chapter in the Alpine World Cup skiing saga.
North American highlights
Three North American skiers aim for the podium, with USA’s Mikaela Shiffrin, the reigning Giant Slalom World Champion, leading the charge. Canadian Valerie Grenier, last season’s winner of a Kranjska Gora GS, is determined to reclaim the top spot. Paula Moltzan of the USA demonstrated impressive speed in the second run at Sölden and is poised for a strong performance. Notably, Candian Claire Timmermann, who skis for the University of Utah, will race in her first World Cup in Saturday’s Stifel Killington Cup GS.
Snow conditions are expected to be excellent for the races in Killington.

Killington history
In the early 1900s, Vermont embraced year-round tourism, kickstarting its ski industry with the Winter Olympics in 1932 and the Civilian Conservation Corps. Perry Merrill, the “Father of Vermont’s State Parks and Alpine Ski Areas,” spearheaded the creation of ski trails, fostering a partnership between the state and private developers. Fast forward to the 1950s, when ski enthusiast Preston Leete Smith’s determination led to the formation of the Sherburne Corporation. Despite challenges, including limited funds and weather setbacks, Killington Basin Ski Area opened on December 13, 1958, marking the beginning of Killington Resort’s legacy.
