Swiss Ski Alpine Director Rudi Huber submitted his resignation last night, effective immediately, noting that he has had too much difficulty securing broad support for what he believes is necessary to be successful in his role. Huber was two years into his four-year contract with the organization when he made the decision to leave.

Since taking on the position two years ago, the Austrian national and former race director for Atomic has worked hard to receive acceptance in the Swiss organization. In his tenure, the Swiss team moved from seventh in the nations’ ranking (2013) to second and third under Huber’s leadership. Additionally, he is credited with helping to create an athletic manager post to oversee the quality of physical conditioning in athletes, supporting the development of a sport psychology program, securing three permanent training slopes for the team, and bringing Thomas Stauffer back to the Swiss coaching staff.

Although the connection to Huber’s resignation is unconfirmed, a controversial report surfaced last week on Blick.ch in which the alpine director was accused of sending a text message to an Austrian coach interested in employment with the Swiss team in which he said he could not recommend an Austrian for the job because of rampant xenophobia in the organization.

Huber, in conjunction with the head coaches, had largely laid the team plans for the summer and preparation period prior to announcing his resignation, so Swiss Ski is under no immediate pressure to name a replacement. They will begin their search in hopes of announcing a new alpine director as soon as possible.
