Switzerland names 2021-22 national team
The Swiss Ski squad expanded its team by five members headed into the Olympic season. Alpine director Walter Reusser, together with head coaches Thomas Stauffer (men), Beat Tschuor (women) and Hans Flatscher (youngsters), made the squad selections for the 2021-22 year. Their highest-level national team consists of 19 athletes for the coming season.
Swiss Ski welcomed three new faces to the national team including previous A-team athletes Priska Nufer and Justin Murisier, and rising star Sandro Simonet from the B-team. Meanwhile Niels Hintermann, Joana Hählen and Melanie Meillard no longer belong to the highest squad and join the A-Team.
25-year-old Simonet joins his first national team season after a remarkable third place finish in the Chamonix World Cup slalom this season. The Graubünden native is toying with adding another discipline to the competition repertoire alongside his slalom specialty. Meanwhile his younger brother, Livio, will take his B-Team spot after a season of top 30 Europa Cup finishes. Livio Simonet was dropped from the Swiss Ski Team after the 2019-20 season and returns for the Olympic year focused on GS.
Swiss Ski also saw small changes to their coaching staff. Marco Odermatt and Loic Meillard will welcome a new assistant coach to the mastery World Cup GS and super G team, Renzo Valsecchi, the previous elite World Cup GS coach. On the women’s side Silvan Stadler handed over his elite Europa Cup slalom group to Christoph Kienzle. Stadler will move to the World Cup group alongside Alois Prenn coaching Wendy Holdener, Michelle Gisin, Aline Danioth, and Andrea Ellenberger. Their previous coach, Jörg Roten, will move to Norway as part of Henrik Kristoffersen’s private team.
A total of ten new athletes joined the Swiss team for the 2021-22 season for a total of 45 female and 56 male athletes.
