Zermatt Bergbahnen has extended the suspension of glacier training operations following its latest assessment of conditions on the Theodul Glacier.
In an update sent to team leaders, the lift company said training will remain suspended, with the next evaluation scheduled for Aug. 14. The earliest possible reopening date is now Monday, Aug. 17.
The continued closure is being driven primarily by persistently warm temperatures rather than a lack of snow. While the upper glacier—served by the only lift that had remained open for training—still has snow coverage, overnight temperatures have not been cold enough for the surface to properly refreeze, creating unsafe skiing conditions.
The extension is the latest setback for national teams and clubs that rely on Zermatt’s glacier for late-summer on-snow training. Resort officials say safety remains the priority as they continue to monitor weather and glacier conditions ahead of the next assessment.
