Winds and fog forced cancellation Sunday of a men's World Cup super combined event, which already had been moved from Chamonix because of poor conditions.
VAL D'ISERE, France — Winds and fog forced cancellation Sunday of a men's World Cup super combined event, which already had been moved from Chamonix because of poor conditions.
"It's not raining … well, not yet … but it's so humid that it's almost like rain. It's getting wetter up on the course. The humidity's so high and it's light drizzle on the bottom of the course," U.S. head coach Phil McNichol reported.
Organizers had lowered the start of the downhill run because of fog and poor visibility. The downhill was delayed 30 minutes and then another half-hour before the event was canceled.
The race would have been the final before the alpine World Championships team is announced this week. McNichol said the men would head to their new European training base in Paganella, Italy, before the tech group heads to Kitzbühel, Austria, for two slaloms next weekend. The speed skiers will have some time off and then train in Italy, too, he said.
In the current World Cup standings, Bode Miller stands third and leads the super G points.
