Who is racing the Saslong super-G in Val Gardena/Gröden, when, and how to watch.
In a season marked by weather-related disruptions, the only previously scheduled Men’s World Cup super-G in Beaver Creek, Colorado, faced cancellation. However, the excitement intensifies as the focus shifts to the Saslong super-G in Val Gardena/Gröden, Italy, now the first super-G of the 2023-24 season on Friday, December 15th.
The roster boasts last year’s season champion, Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt, along with Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde and Austria’s Vincent Kriechmayr who finishe last season 2nd and 3rd best in the demanding discipline. Reigning world champion Canadian James “Jack” Crawford adds to the stellar lineup.
In today’s downhill event from the super-G start, Kilde claimed the 2nd, Odermatt secured 3rd, and Crawford demonstrated strength with a 5th-place finish. Last year’s Saslong super-G faced cancellation, but in 2021, Kilde clinched victory, with Kriechmayr finishing 3rd. Stifel U.S. Ski Team’s Olympic silver medalist Ryan Cochran-Siegle showcased his prowess by securing 9th place.
As the elite athletes gear up for the Saslong super-G, fans eagerly anticipate a thrilling competition, with the world’s best skiers battling for supremacy on the challenging slopes of Val Gardena/Gröden. North Americans to watch
A formidable lineup of North American skiers is set to make waves on the challenging Saslong. Leading the charge is Canada’s Jack Crawford, the reigning World Champion, and Stifel US Ski Team’s Ryan Cochran-Siegle, an Olympic silver medalist, both poised to showcase their prowess in the 2023-24 super-G opener.
Joining the North American ranks are Canadian Jeffrey Read, an impressive force ranked 17th in super-G last season, and Brodie Seger, who closed the previous season in the 24th position, both having successfully qualified for the super-G World Cup finals. Adding to the North American contingent is Riley Seger, Brodie’s brother, concluding the season at 29th, and Stifel US Ski Team teammates Jared Goldberg (44th), River Radamus (45th), Kyle Negomir (47th), and Canadian Cam Alexander (52nd).
Today’s downhill winner and Stifel US Ski Team member Bryce Bennett, who finished last season ranked 61st in super-G, adds to the excitement. These talented skiers will bring their A-game to the Val Gardena/Gröden super-G, promising fans an expert display of speed and skill. Notably, Sam Dupratt, last season’s NorAm super-G champion and a member of the Stifel US Ski Team, will also be contending, further elevating the North American presence in this high-stakes competition.
