Vonn fastest in final Bad Kleinkirchheim training

BAD KLEINKIRCHHEIM, Austria – The snow conditions were described as a bit different by the racers for the second and final downhill training run on Friday. With the slight increase in temperature, the snow got a little softer and provided more grip.

With bib number one, Italy’s Daniela Merighetti posted the fastest time, but missed a gate half way down the course. This turned out to be a big advantage as none of the racers managed to come close to her time apart from Germany’s Viktoria Rebensburg who trailed Merighetti by 0.54 seconds, but also missed a gate in the final section. A total of 11 racers missed gates on the day.

Lindsey Vonn was the fastest among those who made all the gates and finished in third position, 1.25 seconds behind Merighetti.

Rebensburg, who made her first career podium in a downhill last month in Val d’Isère, showcased her excellent technique in the tricky parts of the course and the missed gate at the bottom likely didn’t benefit her much.

“I had a good feeling on the course today for sure but the race is tomorrow,” said the 25-year-old. “I will try to make some better turns than today, because my line wasn’t perfect.”

“You really have to be active on your skis, especially the outside ski, because if lose that you are in trouble. There are so many bumps in the middle section. Some turns are like GS turns where you really have to push and go through the gate to get the whole speed out of it.”

Having been sick for the last few days, Vonn – who was more than 5 seconds off the pace in the first training run – was less cautious and seemed to be recovering from the flu.

“I had a lot more speed today than yesterday, and I think the top part was good. I feel confident in the line that I’m skiing so for tomorrow if I get a little more energy I should be OK.”

Vonn has participated three times in the World Cup downhill at Bad Kleinkirchheim, but she failed to reach the podium on all three occasions (finishing ninth and 18th in 2006 and fourth in 2012).

“I haven’t been very lucky here so far, but hopefully things will be different this weekend,” Vonn concluded.

The women’s downhill race is scheduled for Saturday at 11:30 CET.
