On Tuesday, Far West Skiing announced that Calvin Wilson is the 2017 recipient of the Jeff Wattenmaker Scholarship. The scholarship is a $10,000 award to be used for college academic expenses and is given out annually to a member of the Far West Masters Scholarship Program.

Wilson grew up on Lake Almanor, two hours north of Lake Tahoe, and skied for Squaw Valley, Park City and Diamond Peak over his junior career. Wilson is a humble, kind, hardworking, and talented young man. He has been involved in the Far West Masters Scholarship Program since he was 11 years old, and has been a mentor to numerous Far West athletes at the annual Masters’ training camp at Copper Mountain, Colo., showing the next generation how to ski, survive on the road, and balance scholastics and race training while traveling. Wilson will be attending Bates College in the fall, majoring in environmental sciences and biology. He will also be a member of the men’s alpine ski team.

Jeff Wattenmaker, who started the scholarship before his death in 2010, was an avid ski racer and enjoyed skiing with the Far West Masters. He was very impressed with the Far West Masters Scholarship Program and its ideals. His goal was to pass on his passion for ski racing, and his love for the mountains to his children and the Far West ski racing community.

To be eligible for the Jeff Wattenmaker Scholarship, athletes must be a member of the Far West Masters Scholarship Program and be accepted to an accredited university, junior college, or vocational school for the coming fall. The panel of judges takes a look at each applicant in depth and will go as far as reaching out to the applicants’ coaches, teachers, and peers to get a sense of the character of each applicant. One of the deciding factors in selecting the winner of the scholarship is the level of involvement and commitment to the Far West Masters Program. All Far West Masters scholarship recipients have a chance to be involved, and be part of a community that will help build their confidence and their success in the future.

All Far West alpine athletes ages 13-20 are encouraged to apply for the Far West Masters Scholarship Program. Applications are available now on the Far West Skiing website and are due Sept. 15 for the 2017-18 ski season.
