World Juniors crowns ladies super G and combined champions

HAFJELL, Norway – Italy’s Federica Sosio is the new Junior World Champion in super G followed by local hero Mina Fuerst Holtmann and Swiss skier Rahel Kopp.

When Kopp put down a solid run with bib number 2 and sat in first place for half an hour, she was expected claim the title. But over the course of the competition, weather conditions cleared up and the slope got faster. The first one to steal the top spot away from Kopp was Norway’s Mina Fuerst Holtmann with bib 30. A few minutes later, Sosio raced into first position from bib 35, relegating Holtmann and Kopp to silver and bronze by a 0.21- and 0.30-second margin, respectively.

Sosio is the defending national junior champion in super G and claimed second place in the Europa Cup in Davos this February.

Canadian Candace Crawford finished fifth, and the U.S. Ski Team’s Breezy Johnson was 27th. U18 Nina O’Brien of the National Training group was the fastest birth year 1997 athlete, finishing 30th.

The day wasn’t a total loss for 20-year-old Kopp, as she rallied in the slalom leg to win the alpine combined just a few hours later. France’s Romane Miradoli took silver and Holtmann, just over a second back, also secured her second medal of the day with bronze.

“Today is a great day for me. I didn’t expect this at all, especially not my good result in super G as my top disciplines are giant slalom and slalom,” said Kopp. “I am super happy with my result! After Hafjell, I will be traveling to Andorra for the Europa Cup Finals. I hope I’ll end up with a good result there too to put myself in good position for the coming season”, Kopp said.

For Miradoli, who was fourth in the super G, her combined silver medal was all the sweeter as it was her 21st birthday. Crawford finished ninth, as Junior World slalom champion Paula Moltzan powered into 23rd and O’Brien moved up to 24th.

The men’s super G, which was supposed to take place in nearby Kvitfjell, had to be canceled due to difficult weather conditions. It was rescheduled for Wednesday, March 11. The slalom portion of the alpine combined was held, but results will not be posted until the race is completed tomorrow.
