Alpine Canada announced today it will not send Canadian skiers to the 2021 FIS junior world alpine junior championships in both alpine and ski cross, scheduled for Bulgaria and Russia in early March.

Citing increased travel restrictions in Canada and abroad relating to the COVID-19 pandemic, Alpine Canada stated it was a difficult decision.

“We were fully prepared to send teams ready to compete for the podium,” said Therese Brisson, president and CEO. “[But] unfortunately, new travel restrictions and quarantine measures, logistics for the events, and limited training options made it too unpredictable to have athletes participate and compete at their best.”

Alpine Canada also stated it is shifting the priorities for domestic racing and training for the balance of the season.

“We are consolidating our efforts around a domestic spring training, head-to-head racing and selection camps in April to kick off our preparation for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing and the next world junior alpine championships in March 2022 at Panorama, B.C.”

Phil McNichol, the high performance alpine director, is encouraging athletes “to focus on gaining quality training with their teams and to participate in national competitions as they present themselves in the coming months.”
